Vampire of the Month Superhero Vampire (I can do everything myself!) - When I Grow Up Welcome to the first installment of The Vampire of the Month! I call the voices in (and outside of!) our heads that suck the good stuff outta us our Vampire Voices, and they come in many incarnations. Thats why I thought itd be great to out these Vampires, exposing what they look like along with their Likes and Dislikes in order to better defeat em! This month were meeting the Superhero Vampire, who visits all of us people pleasers/non-delegators/workaholics and tells us we can do it all! Here are 3 Ways to Defeat The Superhero Vampire: When youre asked to take part in something, think NO! in your head and take notice of how you feel. Relieved? Disappointed? Angry? If saying NO! gives you a positive emotion, then commit to saying no (in a softer way thats youre more comfortable with, i.e. Thanks so much for asking, but I just cant commit to that right now) to whatever was asked of you. No need to add something to your plate that doesnt light you up in some way. Spend a couple of days writing down what you spend your time on (yes, everything you do from the time you wake up til the time you go to bed), and star/highlight/circle the tasks where time flew/you felt helpful/were fulfilling. At the end of the experiment (dont you love being a scientist?!), see whats not starred/highlighted/circled and write it on a separate sheet of paper. How can you do less of those things? What can you delegate or trade to get those tasks off your plate? Conversely, you can brainstorm how you can do more of the fulfilling stuff. Carve out time to take care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, creativelyyou name it. Just 20 minutes a day (its just 20 minutes! anyone can find that kinda time!) strumming your ukulele, relaxing in a bubble bath, doing some yoga stretches or calling a long-lost friend sends the Superhero Vampire up, up, and away! The experience welches very eye-opening for me from an employers perspectivebut I also stumbled upon some great information for job seekers as well. So I thought Id shed some light on what the employer really sees when you apply to that position on LinkedIn.Each time someone applies to a position posted on LinkedIn the employer receives an elektronischer brief notification. I received one e-mail for each person that applied. In each e-mail was a snapshot of that candidate. Heres what employers se e when you apply on LinkedInThe Candidates NameThe Headline beneath their NameCurrent Employment Job Title(s) Titles onlyno employment detailsPast Employment Job Titles Titles onlyno employment detailsEducation Interestingly enough, only the anthroponyms of the colleges or UniversitiesRecommendations (It specifically states how many people have recommended you but does not include recommendation details)Connections Exactly how many connections you have.Contact information E-mail address and phone numberIt also included the candidates resume if they chose to apply with one or upload it.To me, what seemed the fruchtwein revealing about these e-mails were the brief details and exactly which information was providedheadlines, job titles, number of recommendations, and number of connections. Start asking colleagues, previous employers, or current clients to leave you a recommendation. Applying for a position, and it showing 0 recommendations is essentially the same as saying, My work isnt good enough to secure any positive feedback whatsoever. Some people are generous and give recommendations freely, but the majority of people only provide one when requested. REQUEST one.Some important information you need to consider 90% of the people who applied had ZERO RECOMMENDATIONS. Having profile recommendations is an immediate and valuable way to stand out from your competition. It shows what real people have to say about your work, and that they validate it. Craft your headline carefully, and with a specific target position in mind. This will immediately identify whether youre a fit and should be more seriously considered. Read the position announcement CAREFULLY. If they request that a resume be uploaded with the application, do it. Le ss than 1% of the people who applied for my openings included their resume with their application, and only one person reached out when she had trouble uploading and sending the three samples I requested. No one else made contact to see how they could submit their three resume samples as requested in the position announcement. Readingand following through withthe requests in the job ad will EXPONENTIALLY INCREASE your chances for consideration. If you dont have any relevant experience, no past or current titles that align to the position, and no recommendations for your work in the area, consider not applying at all. In most cases the employer will just toss your application. IF this is a dream job that youve always wanted and you feel as though youre qualified but lack the appropriate position titles on your profile, consider an alternative means of applying. Use LinkedIn for information and sourcing, but find alternatives for reaching the hiring manager. Employers are getting only an abbreviated look at you. Name, headline, titles, education. Make the most of the space youre given. Make contact. Dont just click apply and see what happens go a step further and reach out to the employer and share your interest in the role and why you think youre a good fit. While its easy to fixate on the success stories, the reality is, most start-ups fail. And nobody really likes to talk about it. Harvard Business School lecturer, Shikhar Ghosh, says venture capitalists like to bury their dead very quietly they emphasise the successes but they dont talk about the failures at all. Ghosh recently led a study on start-up mortality and found that approximately 75 per cent of venture-backed firms in the US fail, while a report by analytics firm, CB Insights, found start-ups typically die 20 months after their last financing round and after having raised $1.3 million. Its why Drew Houston, CEO and co-founder of Dropbox, likens being an entrepreneur to jumping off a cliff and having to build your own parachute. The risks are huge, the payoff is unknown, and youre always a nanosecond away from either soaring to great heights think facebook inc or crashing spectacularly down to earth think Friendster. Friend who? Exactly my point. To succeed you need to, ironically, accept that you may fail. In saying that, if you do manage to succeed, the payoff can be a stronomical. Heres some sage advice from start-up experts and established venture capitalists. 1. Have co-founders two heads are better than one Dont go it alone. A study led by the MIT Entrepreneurship Centrefound that for each additional co-founder (up to four), the odds of a companys success increased. Two to three co-founders seems to be a sweet spot, says Y Combinator partner, Paul Buchheit. Its really about having a passion for the problem youre trying to fix, writes angel investor, Ben Yoskovitz.Ive got to believe in your passion and dedication to the problem youve set out to solve, otherwise theres a good chance that some future shiny object will catch your attention. Its the exact approach Mark Zuckerberg took, who attributes the first pieces of Facebooks code to the side projects and products he created for himself as a teen. I just built a lot of stuff for myself. All throughout my childhood, I built games I wanted to play. I built a music player I wanted. I tried to build stuff that I really wanted for myself, Mark Zuckerberg told Startup School. 3. Put the anwender first, always Companies that wi n are the ones that put users first, says Paul Graham, the co-founder of start-up school, Y Combinator. Graham lists three rules when it comes to thinking about users and what your attitude should be like towards them Always build and develop products with a specific user in mind Your users are your sounding board. Listen to them and theyll show you what is and isnt working Never sacrifice users or user experience for the sake of profit 4. Find the right location Strategically placing your start-up is absolutely crucial, and where you set up shop will depend largely on what sort of start-up you are. For tech companies, Silicon Valley is without doubt the place to be, while fashion labels often flock to New York City. Irrespective of where you land, experts all agree that youll increase your chances of success if you have a strong start-up ecosystem to tap into. Start-up hubs give you greater access to A larger pool of investors More talent More resources like incubator and acceler ator programs Experienced entrepreneurs who can mentor and guide you Based upon statistics from the Startup Genome, Sydney is the 12th best start-up ecosystem in the world, trailing behind the likes of New York, London and Vancouver. 5. Time your launch perfectly Dont launch too early, but dont launch too late either. Its the perfect Goldilocks conundrum of timing a launch just right. Taking too long to launch creates all sorts of difficulties. It slows down momentum, can bog you down in perfectionism, and stops you from getting on with the real job improving your service/product to increase profit. So theres a big case for simply launching something fairly quickly. Launching too early, however, also comes with its setbacks. The biggest danger here is hurtling into things, and throwing up a subpar product that early adopters reject. While nobody expects your first iteration to be perfect, it still needs to solve a problem or fulfil an actual need. 6. Be flexible, but stay focus ed While determination and a stubborn streak are important traits in an entrepreneur, to succeed theres no room for tunnel vision. Youve got to be flexible and willing to drop your original plans when something more promising emerges. In saying that, switching ideas every second week can also be just as fatal. Graham recommends looking towards users as a guiding post if ever in doubt. If youre thinking about turning in some new direction and your users seem excited about it, its probably a good bet, Graham says on his blog. Starting out Ive got an idea, now what?
